Studio Technician (part-time)


The part-time studio technician supports and helps implement the operations of Marwen’s Studio Programs. Marwen’s Studio Programs are at the heart of the organization’s mission with more than 100 courses offered annually in a variety of disciplines and media ranging from painting, drawing, and ceramics, to photography and digital design. The part-time studio technician’s responsibilities include to assist with maintenance of the basement studios, materials, and equipment (ceramics, printmedia, & fashion/fiber), and the education storage spaces; and to maintain systems to organize, print, and distribute student artwork.


Founded in 1987, Marwen’s mission is to educate and inspire young people from under-resourced schools and communities in Chicago through the visual arts. Marwen provides free out-of-school visual art, college planning, and career development programs year-round to students from nearly every Chicago neighborhood. Practicing artists design and teach courses in various disciplines, including painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, video, animation, design and mixed-media.



Studio Programs Team Support

  • Work with education team members to support positive student behavior, foster a sense of community, and help cultivate a safe and positive environment for teaching and learning

  • Attend education department and studio programs meetings, and support the work of studio programs

  • Support teaching artists and studio facilitators with all questions related to basement studios equipment, supplies, and needs during program terms

Studio and Storage Maintenance

  • Work with Studio Programs team to help maintain welcoming and well-organized studio environments and storage facilities

  • Support the cleaning, organization, and maintenance of studio equipment and supplies, with a focus on the ceramics, printmedia, and fashion/fiber studios.

  • Receive supply shipments and distribute materials to appropriate studios and storage facilities

  • Provide support with the maintenance, repair, and replacement of equipment and supplies

  • Assist with maintaining organization of education storage space both in and out of term

  • Keep studio programs staff appraised of supply needs

  • Keep in close communication with TA’s teaching in the basement studios concerning program needs

Ceramics Studio and Kiln Support

  • Develop and maintain ceramics protocols and studio systems

  • Load and unload all fired work from all term courses and SRW workshops

  • Glaze student artwork as needed

  • Keep up general maintenance of ceramic studio

  • Provide support to maintain pug mill

Printmedia Studio Support

  • Develop and maintain printmedia protocols and studio systems

  • Oversee the proper mixing, storing and preparation of printmaking materials and supplies

  • Reclaim screens and maintain them in good working condition

  • Oversee proper calibration of press and exposure units

Student Art Work Organization and Distribution

  • Assist studio team with the collection, organization, and storage of student artwork at the end of term

  • Assists with printing student artwork, and preparation of work for exhibitions

  • Maintain protocols to support the orderly distribution of student artwork at the end of terms

Skills & Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate will have experience working as part of a team with strong communication and organization skills and the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently. Candidates must have proficiency with ceramics and printmaking processes, equipment, and studio maintenance and be able to lift up to 50lbs and perform activities that require repetitive bending, reaching, and lifting. Candidates must generally be available to work program hours (Tuesday-Friday 4-8pm & Saturdays 9am-5pm) during term, with room for some flexibility in the schedule.
