The Hyde Park Art Center is seeking a new Exhibition Preparator Intern for the Fall/Winter term.
This position works under the supervision of the Art Center’s Preparator/Media Technician and Director of Exhibitions. Applicants must have good organizational skills and be sensitive to art material handling and hardware. Familiarity with power tools a plus. The ideal candidate would be an art student or someone interested in learning how to mount exhibitions and work with artists. Undergraduate interns may be eligible for class credit through their institutions. Interns who fully commit to a six-month term may qualify for a free class at the Art Center.
This internship introduces students to all aspects of exhibition-making, from safe handling practices and packing to proper installation and deinstall processes. Interns will learn how to use basic shop tools to create exhibition materials such as shelving, pedestals and temporary walls. We teach proper handling of various types of artwork, hardware, and hanging techniques for all kinds of situations. Be ready to take initiative on maintaining exhibitions that are already up, and problem-solving a variety of common issues and logistics when it comes to installing and deinstalling a professional show. Ideal applicants are current students with active studio practices who are interested in expanding their knowledge of exhibition-making and proper art preparation in an effort to bolster their own work in the creative field.
- This position is very labor intensive; applicant must have a desire to work in a hands-on environment.
- Assist in the coordination of exhibitions from the planning process to the mounting of exhibitions.
- Must be available on select weekends and evenings for openings and other events.
- Must be comfortable working with hardware and other machinery along with technology and media.
