Gallery Assistant Internship Position:
This internship is designed to familiarize you with standard practices in small commercial galleries. You will have the chance to meet and interact with artists, catalogue and organize loaned and sold works, learn how to create printed and written materials that correspond to exhibitions and public events and represent a professional gallery.
Your responsibilities include:
-Advertising new exhibitions through Chicago Artists Resource, Chicago Reader, TimeOut, social media, etc…
-Maintaining email correspondence with: artist inquiries to be considered in future shows, submission materials, inquiries about the gallery, inquiries about the renting of space
-Attending and facilitating exhibition receptions
-Creating drafts of printed materials (press release, promotional postcards, website updates, email blasts, flyers) for public distribution
-Maintaining a professional attitude while in the gallery and assisting with sales of art or records. (Additionally, you will make sure to keep accurate records of all sales made while you are there)
-Checking in and checking out loaned artwork
-Sending a daily record of your tasks via email to owner
-Further tasks as described to you
You can expect:
-a regular schedule of 1 – 6 pm Saturday, 6 – 10 pm on the night of each opening reception (usually Friday or Saturday nights).
-a share of the commission of sales that you make in for-commission exhibitions
-a new knowledge of gallery practices!
Please be reliable and sensable with some customer service skills. Above avergae computer and or web design helpful!
