Description

Merit School of Music is seeking an Early Childhood Instructor for the ages of newborn through 7 years old in its Early Childhood program conducted at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. Fall classes begin the first week in October and candidates should be available to work Saturdays and/or Sunday mornings/afternoons (see below for specific schedule). Qualified candidates may be considered for additional teaching throughout the school year.

Organization Overview

Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.

Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members. Merit has an annual operating budget of $6 million, of which nearly half is supported by contributed revenue.

Reporting Relationship

The Early Childhood Instructor reports to the Early Childhood/ General Music Program Director.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of Early Childhood Instructor include, but are not limited to:

Deliver high-quality instruction to Early Childhood classes of 5 to 12 students
Use Merit’s curriculum when constructing lesson plans
Participation in Merit faculty meetings and/or department meetings
Timely correspondence with Merit staff and students/families
Other projects as assigned

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

Proven success teaching early childhood music classes
Ability to create positive rapport with students and families and retain them from session to session
Positive collaboration with faculty and staff
Demonstrated successful classroom management skills
Ability to direct student learning while engaging caregivers and parents
Fantastic communication skills
Flexible and adaptive disposition
A high level of personal musicianship

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience/training

All classes take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center (38 S. Peoria St., Chicago). The class schedule listed below includes all classes in the fall session which should continue throughout the academic year assuming minimum class enrollment is met each term:

• Music Explorers, 0-15 months, Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 9:30am-10:15am
• Tuneful Toddlers, 16-23 months, Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
• Movers & Groovers, 2-3 years, Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m
• Music Masters I, 3-5 years, Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 12:30-1:15 p.m.
• Music Masters II, 5-7 years, Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 1:30-2:30/2:40 p.m
• Ukulele & You!: Beginning Beats, Mixed Ages/ Family Class (3-7 years), Start: 10/6, End Date: 12/15, Saturdays, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
• Music Masters I, 3-5 years, Start: 10/7, End Date: 12/16, Saturdays, 9:30-10:15 a.m.
• Music Explorers, 0-15 months, Start: 10/7, End Date: 12/16, Saturdays, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
• Tuneful Toddlers, 16-23 months, Start: 10/7, End Date: 12/16, Saturdays, 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Compensation

Compensation is $50/hour.
