Director of Public Programs

The Director of Public Programs is responsible for creating a thought provoking, strategic, and engaging calendar of exhibitions, public, and community programs serving visitors of all ages. The Director is responsible for managing existing programs, assessing their effectiveness, and creating new programs that extend Peninsula School of Art's reach beyond its doors - into the local community and to the widest audience possible.

Primary Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs will:

- Propose, conceptualize, develop, and implement a strategic, entrepreneurial, and focused plan for exhibitions, gallery-related public programs, and community programs, that:

  • Encourage new thining and creative growth
  • Promote curatorial excellence through comprehensive research
  • Educate the general public about the importance and appreciation of art
  • Ensure that PenArt provides curriculum-based, child-centered art education to K-12 school groups, as well as preschoolers
  • Strengthen relationships with diverse communities
  • Attract external funding support
  • Increase public familiarity with PenArt's identity, mission, and services

- Recruit exhibiting artists and develop relationships with the many local, regional, and national organizations that represent a broad range of opportunities to reach new constituencies and visitors, both on campus and through media, virtual, and off-site opportunities.

- Work with community groups to provide educational experiences in partnership with other arts, cultural, educational, and civic organizations at PenArt or off-site. Devleop and manage key relationships with local and regional schools, community groups, and other arts organizations.

- Plan and direct the preparation and design of educational and interpretive literature for exhibitions, school visits, public programs, and other educational services.

- Oversee the budget for the exhibition and outreach programs and work with the development staff to make recommendations for potential sources of programmatic support for all programs. Work closely with the development staff to assist in authoring grants and presentations to foundations, individuals, and organizations that may give financial support for exhibition and outreach programs.

- Work with the Executive Director and marketing staff to identify and execute promotional campaigns for exhibition and outreach programs to a wide audience, including developmnet of content for promotional materials in both print and online formats.

- Supervise volunteer programs (gallery, docent, and outreach) to further the effectiveness and reach of the organization, as well as "invite the comunity into" PenArt.

- Maintain statistics and develop procedures for program evaluations.

- Manage correspondence and contracts with artists, partners, and other consultants or vendors related to programs.

Additional Responsibilities:

- Work collaboratively with other staff and the Executive Director to develop exhibition and community-related policies and procedures for PenArt.

- Maintain all records of programmatic and partnership activities.

- Perform other tasks as assigned or necessary.

- Due to the nature of programs, some evening and weekend work is required; Director will participate as needed in programs outside traditional work hours.

Requirements
Skills & Qualifications: 

- Bachelor's degree required, Master's Degree preferred in art related field, and three years of relevant work experience in teaching, gallery, or arts education, and program development.

- Demonstrable knowledge of, and experience in principles, practices, and techniques of art education and gallery management.

- Strong organizational skills, motivation, and attention to detail.

- Command of Microsoft Office Suite and of various digital tools to produce and edit digital content.

- Command and demonstrated use of social media tools as means of building and community and reaching new audiences.

- Excellent communication skills, both in writing and in person.

- Friendly, engaging, and professional demeanor; ability to relate to people of all ages, from toddlers to adults, and from diverse socio economic and ethnic backgrounds.

- Knowledge of creative fields and the artistic community.
