Description

Merit School of Music seeks a highly qualified candidate for the position of Choir Director to start teaching no later than the week of September 18th in our Merit Music in Communities Program. The successful candidate will teach approximately 5.5 hours of choir instruction between two sites, Deneen School of Excellence (7257 S. State St) and KIPP Academy (4814 W. Ohio St). Exact rehearsal schedule is tentative (please see SCHEDULE for more details). An accompanist will be provided for both sites.

Organization Overview

Since its founding in 1979, Merit School of Music has successfully motivated and inspired over 50,000 young people with high-quality music instruction. The School’s broad-ranging comprehensive curriculum, extensive level of financial aid, sense of community and the standard of excellence set forth by the faculty and students are major components of its success.

Merit offers a multi-leveled, structured curriculum in a college preparatory environment. Programs take place at the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in Chicago’s West Loop and at nearly 30 locations in neighborhoods across the City. Instruction is offered to approximately 5,000 students of all ages, from infants to adults, and from beginners to the Juilliard-bound by over 150 accomplished faculty members.

Merit has an annual operating budget of approximately $6 million, of which more than half is supported by contributed revenue, with a third coming from earned revenue, including rental income.

Reporting Relationship

The Choir Director reports to the Voice and Guitar Program Director

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Choir Director include, but are not limited to:
Teaching at least 5.5 hours of weekly choir rehearsals to 4th grade students
Prepare students for performances two to three times per year, as agreed upon by Merit and site administrators
Provide the highest quality of instruction to a diverse group of students
Support students’ growth through Merit’s continuum of programming
Attend Merit faculty meetings and departmental meetings
Other projects as assigned

Personal Skills/Attributes/Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
Demonstrated success teaching choir to similar age groups (3rd – 5th grade)
Experience working with students of diverse backgrounds
Ability to communicate effectively and work well with Merit staff and partnering leadership
Punctual, professional, and collegial
Enthusiastic and adaptable
The ability to travel via car or public transportation

Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent experience

Compensation
$50.00 per hour
