Call for ILLINOIS Artists: Chicago Veterans’ Home, Chicago

The Art-in-Architecture Program of the Capital Development Board is pleased to announce a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to Illinois professional artists to create permanent original public art for the Chicago Veterans’ Home in Chicago, Illinois.

Deadline: Friday, December 14, 2018 4:30 P.M.

This public art commission is open to all professional artists, artisans, or artist-led teamsthat live and work in the state of Illinois.

ARTISTIC OBJECTIVES

Several studies in medical journals have reported that the arts have “a clear contribution to make and offer major opportunities in the delivery of better health, wellbeing and improved experience for patients, service users and staff alike.”

The artwork in the Veterans’ Home will serve many functions including to help soothe and provide comfort to residents; serve as a wayfinding aid for residents, visitors, and staff; provide boundaries to public and private space; and welcome residents, visitors, and staff alike to a household.

The committee has no preferred theme, media or format and does not wish to be limited to patriotic themes or color palettes.

PROJECT SITE

This 200-bed, skilled-care residential facility for veterans is designed around a small-house residential model. It will consist of 12 clusters of 13 residents, known as “households” and four memory support households of 11 residents for a total of 16 households. The majority of residents will be geriatric veterans in their 70s, 80s, and 90s requiring long-term skilled care.

The artwork for this project will be sited throughout the facility at the entrances to each of the eight households giving each its own distinctive personality and further adding to its sense of uniqueness. The uniqueness of each entrance may even be a wayfinding device for residents and visitors.

Because the artwork will be part of a healthcare setting it will have unique requirements to ensure sustainability and durability. The pieces must be touchable and cleanable with standard facility and healthcare cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants. While defining the front of each household the artwork will be out in a corridor that is heavily used by residents, visitors and staff but also wheelchairs and food delivery carts.

Additionally, the artwork must comply with all aspects of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Illinois Accessibility Code of 2018 including ensuring protrusions are less than four inches into the accessible route.

The artist will be required work very closely with the project architect and project team to ensure smooth and timely project coordination.

BUDGET

The budget for the project is $280,000. It is broken down as eight households at $35,000 per household.

No less than three artists/teams will be selected from the pool of eligible artists/teams and paid a fee of $3,000 each to develop and present site specific proposals.

The selected artists/teams will be contacted with details of the proposal process and contracts.

HOW TO APPLY

Interested artists must send application materials by Friday, December 14, 2018 at 4:30 P.M.. Submissions received after this date will be kept for review for other Art-in-Architecture projects.
