CALL FOR ART Third Shifters: Art That Comes Alive at Night


We are looking for visual art inspired by all that comes to life at night: the orange-soda glow of city street lamps, the monsters under the bed, the insomniacs and the constellations that just might be airplanes. We want to see what you make during your most ambitious all-nighters and hear what you write on your red-eye flights. Not sure if your work applies? We want to see that work too!

TO SUBMIT VISUAL ART, email the following to

-jpegs of the piece or pieces that you wish to submit (feel free to send in unfinished work with a description of your vision of the final product)

-a short (one to two paragraph) artist statement explaining your work

-an artists resume or CV

-a link to your website/Instagram/any press that you feel that we should know about

-an answer to the following question: "How does your work come alive at night?"


We are also looking for people to perform at the myriad events that will happen during the Third-Shifters exhibition! If you are interested in working with us as a performer (or you know someone who might be), send an email with links to your work and a description of your ideas to .

The Details:

-All submission materials are due on August 25th, 2018

-Submission is FREE, individual artists keep 100% of the proceeds if their work sells

-Acceptances will be sent out via email no later than September 1st, 2018 (please note that if you sent your materials in earlier than August 25th, you may get an acceptance earlier than September 1st)

-All work from artists based outside of Chicagoland must arrive no later than September 18th, 2018

-Install for Chicacagoland-based artists will be September 20th and the morning of September 21st, 2018

-The exhibition will run from Friday, September 21st through Sunday, September 23rd, with a variety of events each day

-De-install will occur Monday, September 24th (any art shipped in from out of town will be shipped back the following week)

-The Third-Shifters exhibition and all related events will be held at Chicago's newest and most wonderful woman-owned and -operated project space, The Martin ( )


Our goal is that the Third-Shifters exhibition be as professionally, intellectually, and financially fruitful as possible for all artists and participants involved. To these ends, any sales that occur will go through each individual artist who will keep 100% of the proceeds. Each artist will be promoted (both individually and as a group) on a variety of social media platforms. Any press will include the names of all artists, and the curator will do all that she can to increase publicity. An exhibition catalog including all of the work in the show, as well as write-ups for each artist and thoughtful essays and photographs will be released as a PDF available for free online. All events related to the exhibition will have free admission, and all submissions are completely free.
