Chicago Artists Resource (CAR) is an innovative arts service website administered by the Chicago Artists Coalition. CAR is an online extension of the capabilities, resources and leadership of the city's cultural community and a demonstration of Chicago's commitment to the important contribution successful artists make to a vital, world-class city. CAR provides artists with information on a wide range of issues related to professional practice and a connection to local, national and international resources.
CAR is for Artists
CAR is for individual artists and for arts organizations. Artists working in every media (visual, performing, literary, music and theater) will find useful information in CAR. Visitors will also find insurance, financial, legal, health, and business information. People who are buying or leasing space will find explanations and resources for every aspect of real estate, from establishing credit, the mortgage process, finance and ownership options, zoning and code issues, to home inspections.
About the Chicago Artists Coalition
The mission of the Chicago Artists Coalition is to build a sustainable marketplace for entrepreneurial artists and creatives.
Chicago Artists Coalition was founded in 1974 by a group of artists who sought to create a better environment and future for the artistic community living and working in the Chicagoland area. In addition to building a supportive peer network for artistic development, the organization has also played an important role in city and regional arts advocacy. Chicago Artists Coalition was instrumental in the establishment of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs; proved vital in advocating for the Percent for Art Bill (now adopted by cities nationwide); and was directly involved in the creation of both the Illinois Arts Alliance (now Arts Alliance Illinois) and Chicago Artists Month, now celebrating its 16th year. Over the years, as the identity and needs of Chicago Artists Coalition’s members and artistic community have evolved, so too have Chicago Artists Coalition’s services and programs as a dynamic and responsive institution. Always endeavoring to be at the forefront of artist advocacy, Chicago Artists Coalition offers a unique hybrid of educational, professional development, and exhibition programming that empowers artists to realize their full creative potential while nurturing a community inspired by and devoted to them. In June 2011 Chicago Artists Coalition moved its headquarters to the art-centric West Loop neighborhood, home to many of the city’s leading contemporary art galleries and alternative exhibition spaces. Chicago Artists Coalition transformed the 8,000 square foot space to comprise nine working artist studios, two exhibition spaces that can also accommodate public workshops, and administrative office space.
CAR is funded in part by grants from The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, Leveraging Investments in Creativity, Inc. (LINC), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
The Chicago Artists Coalition receives other general and programmatic support from Alphawood Foundation; Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; Arts Work Fund for Organizational Development; Chicago Community Trust; CityArts; The Coleman Foundation; Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; Illinois Arts Council Agency; the John E. & Jeanne T.
